Harvest Moon to Appear Tonight, Less than a Week Before the Start of the Fall Season!

The Harvest Moon is the name that was given to the moon that appears closest to the autumnal equinox. It will be appearing in tonight’s sky, and it is especially special because it will be accompanied by a penumbral lunar eclipse.

A full moon occurs when the Earth, moon and sun are close to alignment with the moon on the opposite side of the Earth, which is how we get to see the entire sunlit part from here on Earth!

The Harvest Moon “will appear much larger than normal,” according to NASA and will be low-hanging, with reddened clouds and dust. So be sure to take a peek outside this evening to take in the beauty of the Harvest Moon! And if you’re in the Eastern Hemisphere, look out for the Eclipse as well.

According to Space.com, the Eclipse will be visible to varying degrees across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Western Pacific. The point of maximum eclipse will take place at 18:54:20 Universal Time (UTC), or 2:54 a.m. EDT (1854 GMT). Viewers in other parts of the world will enjoy a normal full moon.
