2020 has been quite the year and to make Halloween night even spookier than it already is, there will be a rare Blue Moon spotted. The moon will not actually be blue in color, but instead, the name comes from it being the second full moon of the month. This year, October has two full moons, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The first one will take place on Thursday, October 1st, and the second on All Hallow’s Eve!

Two full moons in one month is not very common and only happens on average every 2 1/2 to 3 years, so we are lucky that Halloween night will be lit up by this rare moon! A blue moon on Halloween is so rare that it only occurs once every 19 years (known as a Metonic Cycle).

The Farmer’s Almanac goes on to talk about how we describe unusual events as “Once in a Blue Moon,” an expression that was “first noted back in 1821 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare.”

2020 has not been a year like the others we are used to and for the Halloween Season, it may be no different. Luckily, we got wind of Spirit Halloween opening their thousands of stores across the country, giving spooky season lovers some hope for a somewhat “normal” holiday. For The Hershey Company, the Halloween Season makes up about 10% of their annual sales, according to Candy Industry.

The chocolate company seems rather optimistic though to take on a Halloween Season during a pandemic. Michele Buck, the company’s Chairman and CEO, discussed the spooky holiday on a recent conference call regarding second quarter earnings, “Halloween celebrations are likely to be different this year, with an earlier start to the season and more geographic differences than in prior years,” Buck said. “We expect that there will be more at-home activities, with families sharing timeless traditions and new ways for people to celebrate with neighbors.”

Half of the company’s product is purchased for self-consumption, as in at home for an individual to enjoy. The other half is made up of sales from trick-or-treating. Candy Industry stated that “the most popular Halloween packtypes (assortment and snack size) have shown about a 12 percent growth across the marketplace during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Hershey’s has already been sending out Halloween orders since May, shining a hopeful light on the 2020 Halloween Season ahead. We are almost certain that consumers will stir up some safe and creative ways to trick-or-treat this Halloween Season and Hershey’s will most likely be in the goodie bags of many!

Everyone knows that Halloween is on October 31 regardless of the day of the week it lands on, but one group is petitioning to move Halloween to the last Saturday of October. The national petition put out by Halloween & Costume Association is up on Change.org and has already gained the support of over 15,000 signatures (as of the time of reporting).

The non-profit group seeks to secure the attention of the president to make this change, citing it’s for a “safer, longer, stress-free celebration.” It further goes on to say, “Why cram it into 2 rushed evening weekday hours when it deserves a full day!?!”

What are your thoughts on this petition? Is it a ‘Yay’ or ‘Nay’? Let us know in the comments below!

The Halloween Season has many people in search of haunts. One house that has caught the attention of many is a 1920s home located in Estancia, New Mexico. The home was ordered from a Sears catalog as a build-it-yourself kit.

According to Estancia Board of Trustees member and former Estancia Mayor Morror Hall who been talking to the local media, the build-it-yourself home kit was purchased in the 1920s by Fred Ayers, a local lawyer. Interestingly, while Sears the company has filed for bankruptcy, the home still stands after nearly 100 years later.

Although the home is abandoned with not even a door at the door frame, it remains owned by the Ayers family who raise cattle on the nearby property. It is also fenced off to avoid trespassers, but that hasn’t prevented visitors from making a stop for a photo shoot.

The eerie house is believed to be haunted. According to a local resident’s account, you may possibly catch a glimpse of a ghost standing in the window.

The ghost house, located on Highway 55 in Estancia, may look abandoned and forgotten but it sure has a fair share of visitors around the Halloween season, especially from those looking for an interesting haunt.

Let us know in the comments below if you’ve paid a visit to this abandoned build-it-yourself house before!
